Land Conservation
- Consider donating a conservation easement over your property. You’ll be able to use and enjoy the property and keep it in your family’s ownership and care for generations to come while preserving the land’s conservation values forever.
- Encourage your city council or county commissioners to consider a Special Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) with greenspace conservation as its focus.
- When you complete your Georgia income tax form, check the box next to the Georgia Greenspace Trust Fund and donate a few dollars every year.

Water Conservation
Indoor Water Conservation Tips
- Reuse clean household water. Collect all the water that is wasted while waiting for the hot water to reach your faucet or showerhead. Use this to water your houseplants or outdoor planters. Do the same with water that is used to boil eggs or steam vegetables.
- Shorten your shower by one minute. Cut back on your shower time and you will rack up big savings in water and energy.
- Use a glass for rinse water when brushing teeth instead of letting the faucet run. Shave the same way. An electric razor also saves water.

Outdoor Water Conservation Tips
- Collect water to keep your valuable plants alive. You’ll be surprised at how much water drips from your air conditioner, and at how much you can catch in a rain barrel under your downspouts.
- Mulch. Cover the entire area from the trunk to the ends of the branches with pine straw, bark chips or shredded hardwood mulch. Use newspapers underneath to help the soil retain moisture.
- Prioritize plants. When water is scarce, give it to your valuable or irreplaceable trees and shrubs first. Don’t worry about annuals and turf grasses that are easy to replace.

Tips for Saving Water at Work
- Educate your employees and co-workers. Building understanding among your employees and co-workers is important. Awareness of water scarcity issues and water conserving practices not only save water, but also save money (on operation and production costs).
- Install water efficient equipment such as ultra-low flow toilets, faucet aerators, and water-conserving icemakers. As appliances and equipment wear out, replace them with water-saving models.
- Minimize the use of water for cleaning purposes.

Litter Prevention
- Set an example by not littering.
- Pick up one piece of litter every day.
- If you haul materials in the back of a truck, be sure to cover your load! Much of the litter on our roadways is accidentally blown out of the back of trucks.
- Make sure your trash cans have lids that can be securely attached. If you have curbside trash service, don’t put out uncovered containers or open boxes filled with trash.
- Carry a litterbag in your car. Try reusing your plastic grocery bags. They make great car litterbags!

- Food waste can be easily composted; make a backyard composting pile and mix with your yard waste.
- Quickly rinse recyclable items with cold water prior to placing them in your recycling bin.
- Remember to check frequently with your city or county to see what items can be recycled. Collection programs are changing and adding new programs all the time.
